Avatar 2 was already the highest-grossing film of 2022 after edging out Top Gun: Maverick, but it was still behind Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $1.916 billion box office gross. However, Avatar: The Way of Water has now earned $1.92 billion, beating Spider-Man: No Way Home in terms of profits, which was no easy task considering the Marvel Studios superhero film featured all the Spider-Man actors together on the big screen for the first time. With the film’s success and future Avatar franchise films in the making, The Way of Water is now presented with the challenge of crossing $2 billion in earnings like its predecessor and other iconic movies.

After Avatar: The Way of Water beat Spider-Man: No Way Home, it became the sixth highest-grossing film of all time, and it is now on the path to earning $2 billion at the box office. Avatar: The Way of Water is currently behind Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and the first Avatar in terms of biggest box office movies. However, it might be important for fans to note that two of those five films are also Cameron movies.

The first Avatar film is the highest-grossing film of all time out of the ones listed, earning $2.9 billion. As a result, Cameron is the only filmmaker to have had three films cross $1.5 billion at the box office. If the Avatar sequel can cross this $2 billion threshold, Cameron will have three films in his collection to cross $2 billion.

The fact that Avatar 2’s theatrical release was extended in China until the Chinese New Year is a good sign that could help push the film into the $2 billion profit range. Despite the high production costs of the Avatar sequel, Cameron looks to have made a successful hit that will certainly see a third film, and maybe even a fourth, seeing as how it was reported that Cameron is already well into production on future Avatar sequels.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now playing in theaters.
