Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark)
Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic)
Victoria Azarenka (Belarus)
Maria Sharapova (Russia)
Li Na (China)
Samantha Stosur (Australia)
Vera Zvonareva (Russia)
Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland)
Marion Bartoli (France)
Andrea Petkovic (Germany)
Given the unpredictability of the women’s field it is worth seeing some more names, legends included.
Kim Clijsters (Belgium)
Serena Williams (US)
Sabine Lisicki (Germany)
As a result of their seedings, defending champion Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams will be meeting a Top 10 ranked player as early as the 4th round. In fact last year’s finalists Li Na and Clijsters could face off in the 4th round. Such is the women’s field.
Wozniacki will have to handle 13th seed Jelena Jankovic in a possible 4th round match-up before meeting the winner of the Li-Clijsters match for a place in the last 4. The so called World no.1 must possibly get ready to hand over her top spot to Kvitova.
Sania Mirza opens her campaign against Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova. Nothing much can be expected from her. The experiences with her over the past yrs have taught us this.
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have been drawn in the same half. Sabine Lisicki could loom in the 4th round for Maria. Vera Zvonareva could have a match-up with Serena, the 5 time Aussie Open winner (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010) in the 4th round. A Serena-Maria clash in the quarterfinal would be a marvelous spectacle.
US Open champion and the great Aussie hope Samantha Stosur has Marion Bartoli and current hotshot Petra Kvitova in her half of the draw. That potential clash between Kvitova and Stosur in the quarterfinal should be among the matches of the tournament, hopefully.
The emergence of Kvitova gives some much needed consistency and stability to the WTA Tour. Hope this cherubic Czech youngster takes the crown and the cake
